New Appointments

The President, Vice Presidents and National Council are delighted to announce the following appointments.

To be Master of the Federation of Merchant Mariners with immediate effect. Captain P Goodwin FNI a Member of the Merchant Officers of Thanet.



To be Vice President Federation of Merchant Mariners with immediate effect. Captain E M Scott RD**FNI RNR MNM.

Nominated by the Merchant Mariners of Wight where he is a member, agreed by the National Council and approved by the President and Vice Presidents we are privileged to welcome Captain Edward Martin Scott to the Federation of Merchant Mariners.

Captain Scott has had an outstanding career at sea and ashore. Vice Presidents represent the Federation and promote our aims so we are very fortunate to have such outstanding representative as Captain Scott.

A brief account of our Vice President’s career is as follows:-

Born Birmingham, Warwickshire, 1942. Educated Hardy's School, Dorchester, and Varndean Grammar, Brighton.

Seagoing career commenced in May 1959 with a year of pre-sea training at the School of Navigation, Warsash, Southampton. Apprenticed to the Royal Mail Line in 1960, remaining with the company until gaining his Master's certificate in 1970, then to British Rail Shipping and International Services Division at Weymouth in Dorset.

Promoted to Master 1975, commanding most units of the Sealink southwest sector fleet serving Cherbourg and the Channel Isles, until its closure in 1986.

Following a variety of commands, including Sea Container's cruise ferry Orient Express, running between Venice and Istanbul, and the Trinity House research vessel Trinity Explorer during its 1990 season in the Arctic Ocean. 

He was selected for command with Holland America Line when they appointed British officers to their Windstar fleet of sailing cruise ships in 1992, serving the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Central America and French Polynesia until retirement in 2004. 

A full career in the Royal Naval Reserve ended in 1997 after 37 years' service.  Appointed a Midshipman in 1960, promoted to Commander in 1981, Captain in 1991, serving on minelayers, frigates, assault vessels and aircraft carriers.  Took part in several exercises to Northern Norway and the Mediterranean with the United Kingdom Amphibious Task Force. 

A Founder Member and Fellow of the Nautical Institute, President 2000-2002. Chaired Membership Committe for 23 years. Currently a member of the Fellowship Committee.

Master of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners 2007-2008.

He sits on the Merchant Navy Medal Committee and has been a Younger Brother of Trinity House since 1985.

He holds the Australian Merchant Navy Cross with two clasps and was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal in 2008.

Martin and his wife Carole reside in Ryde, Isle of Wight.
